Nanbokuchō period
南北朝時代
Movement · period · 1333–1392
Dates. Here from 1333, as the national institutions date it1: the fall of the Kamakura shogunate and the beginning of Emperor Go-Daigo’s Kenmu Restoration. Often it starts only in 1336 (Mason), when the Kenmu government collapsed and Go-Daigo, facing the emperor Ashikaga Takauji had set up in Kyoto, moved his court to Yoshino2 — strictly on 23 January 1337. It ends on 19 November 1392, when the Southern court handed the regalia to the Northern and the two lines were reunited3.
