Jōmon period
縄文時代
Movement · period · c. 11,000–400 BCE
Dates. Both ends are archaeological, not events. It begins with the first pottery, now usually put about 16,000 years ago, and ends where the wet-rice farming and metal tools of the Yayoi culture take its place1. Mason gives c. 11,000–400 BCE2; Nabunken ends it already about 800 BCE because it follows the earlier, radiocarbon start of the Yayoi period, while the Tokyo, Kyoto and Nara museums keep the older end in the 5th century BCE3. Dates before 4713 BCE cannot be stored here, so the start stays open.
