Final Jōmon
縄文時代晩期
Movement · period · c. 1000 BCE–c. 400 BCE
Dates. One of the six phases into which the Jōmon — too long to treat as one — is usually divided by the development of its pottery1; its limits are changes in pottery and way of life, dated by radiocarbon, not events. From about 1000 BCE, when grains — rice among them — appear at its sites, to about 400 BCE, when the Yayoi culture with wet-rice farming takes over2.
