Early Jōmon
縄文時代前期
Movement · period · c. 5000–2500 BCE
Dates. One of the six phases into which the Jōmon — too long to treat as one — is usually divided by the development of its pottery1; its limits are changes in pottery and way of life, dated by radiocarbon, not events. It begins about 5000 BCE with settled villages of pit houses and ends about 2500 BCE, when these grow into the large, trading communities of the Middle Jōmon2.
