Azuchi-Momoyama period
安土桃山時代
Movement · period · 1573–1603
Dates. The time of Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, named after their castles at Azuchi and Momoyama (Fushimi). Here 1573–1603, as Nabunken and the Tokyo and Nara museums date it1: it begins when Nobunaga drove the last Ashikaga shōgun from Kyoto and ends when Tokugawa Ieyasu was appointed shōgun2. Other starts are 1568 (Nobunaga enters Kyoto) and 1576 (Azuchi castle begun); other ends 1598 (Hideyoshi’s death) and 1600 (Ieyasu’s victory at Sekigahara). Art history usually lets it run to 1615, the fall of the Toyotomi at Osaka3 — hence “Momoyama period, 1573–1615” at the Kyoto National Museum and in Mason4.
