Japanese era name (令和) for the years 2019–: 2019 is Reiwa 1 (元年). Reiwa (令和) is a Japanese era name (nengō), proclaimed in 2019. Its years are counted in lunar years from the new year before the proclamation: 2019 is Reiwa 1 (元年). A Japanese source dates a year within it as “Reiwa 2” (令和2年) rather than by a continuous count. Since 1868 an era is that of an emperor (one reign, one era): Reiwa is the era of Naruhito, who came to the throne on 1 May 2019. Before: Heisei.
