relief print
Term · object type
A print from a matrix whose raised surface carries the ink — the parts that are not to print are cut away; printed with little pressure. Woodcut, wood engraving and linocut are relief prints. The opposite of intaglio (engraving, etching), where the ink lies in the grooves: in a relief print it lies on what is left standing, so it is enough to ink the block and bring it into firm, even contact with the paper1. See woodcut and wood engraving. Wikipedia, Woodcut, “As a relief method, it is only necessary to ink the block and bring it into firm and even contact with the paper or cloth”. ↩ Literatur Wikipedia, Woodcut: Anon., Woodcut, in: Wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodcut (zuletzt abgerufen am 30.10.2026).
