Regency of the Heungseon Daewongun

흥선대원군 집정

Event · regency · 1864 – November 1873 · Seoul, South Korea

In 1864 the Daewongun, father of the twelve-year-old King Gojong, came to power as Prince Regent and carried out reforms to reassert the strength of the monarchy; he resisted the Western demands for trade1. He withdrew in November 1873 after a memorial by Choe Ik-hyeon against the royal relatives’ part in the government2. His rule saw the rebuilding of the Gyeongbokgung.
