훈민정음 반포

Event · proclamation · 1446 · Seoul, South Korea

King Sejong is best remembered for his part in the invention of the Korean script, now called hangul, first named “the proper sounds to instruct the people” (hunmin jeongeum)1. The book of that name, with the king’s preface, the rules and the explanations by Jeong In-ji, Sin Suk-ju and others, was completed in the first ten days of the 9th month of 1446 — the date of promulgation it records2.
