Event · exhibition · 1955 · Ashiya, Japan

In 1955, near Osaka, a group of artists took over a beachside park for a thirteen-day exhibition of paintings, sculptures and objects installed in a grove of pine trees — described as an “event”, the first experiment in both performance and conceptual art, organized by the Gutai Art Association that Yoshihara Jirō had founded the year before1: the “Experimental Outdoor Exhibition of Modern Art to Challenge the Midsummer Sun” in the pine grove of Ashiya Park2.
