Fire in the Kondō of Hōryū-ji

法隆寺金堂火災

Event · fire · 26 January 1949 · Ikaruga, Japan

On 26 January 1949 the Kondō of Hōryūji, the oldest wooden building in the world, caught fire and its wall paintings were burnt1 — most of them blackened beyond reading2. The shock led to the Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties of 1950, and since 1955 the 26th of January has been Japan’s day for protecting cultural properties from fire3.
