安土城築城
Event · construction · 1576–1579 · Ōmihachiman, Japan
Kyoto having burnt again in 1573, Oda Nobunaga decided in 1576 to start anew and established his headquarters at the small village of Azuchi on the shore of Lake Biwa; the best craftsmen and artists of the country converged on his palace1. Building began in the first month of Tenshō 4 (1576), Nobunaga moved into the finished keep in the 5th month of 1579, and the castle was completed about 1581; its keep burnt after the Honnōji incident of 15822. The period of Azuchi and Momoyama is named after it and Hideyoshi’s castle.
