Mongol invasions of Japan

元寇(文永の役・弘安の役)

Event · invasion · 1274 and 1281 · Fukuoka, Japan

Goryeo, subject to the Mongols, was forced to take part in two Mongol campaigns against Japan in 1274 and 1281 and to build the warships and provide the supplies; both failed, largely because the Mongols lacked experience of the sea1. After the first, a defence wall was built along the shore of Hakata Bay2.
