Go-Shirakawa’s hall of a thousand and one Kannon images, built in 1164, burnt in 1249; only 156 of the statues were saved, and they formed the nucleus of the new installation. The rebuilt hall was finished by 1253, the main image installed in 1254 and the final dedication held in 12661. The central seated Thousand-armed Kannon, begun in 1251 and completed three years later, was Tankei’s last work2.
