Fire of the Wakakusadera
若草伽藍焼失
Event · fire · 670 · Ikaruga, Japan
Prince Shōtoku’s second foundation, the Wakakusadera — the first Hōryūji — burnt down in 670; its rebuilding began at once and was completed by 7111. The present western precinct was built after the fire, northwest of the old site2. Its Shaka triad may have been made to replace an image by the sculptor Tori lost in the fire3.
