Four-lion pagoda, Hwaŏm-sa

Artwork · Anonymous · 8th century · pagoda · Hwaeomsa

A fine example of Unified Silla stone craftsmanship at Hwaeomsa: the three-storey pagoda rests on four crouching lions around a Buddhist monk; the base is carved with apsaras dancing and playing music, the lowest storey with doors flanked by guardians. 1 Portal 2000, pp. 72–73, fig. 38. ↩ Literatur Portal 2000: Jane Portal, Korea: Art and Archaeology, London: British Museum Press 2000.
