Artwork · Ryuzaburo Umehara · 1940 · painting · Eisei Bunko Museum
From Ryuzaburo Umehara (1888–1986), pupil of Renoir in France for five years and son of a silk-weaving family, during his visits to Beijing in 1939–1943, when the city was occupied by Japan: the palace of the Qing emperors in a riot of colour — orange roofs, red-orange walls, green trees, blue-white clouds — broad areas of colour seen from shifting viewpoints, flat and decorative like a textile. 1 Mason 2005, pp. 379–380, fig. 452. ↩ Literatur Mason 2005: Penelope E.
