Fallen Leaves
Artwork · Hishida Shunsō · 1909 · byōbu
A pair of two-panel screens by Hishida Shunsō (1874–1911) with only three motifs — trees, leaves, three tiny birds — in a minimum of outline: the trunks so tall that their lower branches cannot be seen, the forms overlapping in flat planes of colour. The style, mōrōtai, tried to bring Western emphasis on space and light into Nihonga by reducing the line. 1 Mason 2005, p. 365, fig. 432. ↩ Literatur Mason 2005: Penelope E.
