Daruma
Artwork · Nakahara Nantenbo · 1917 · kakemono
A zenga by Nakahara Nantenbo (1839–1925), one of the best-known Zen masters of his day, who claimed to have produced over a hundred thousand works: taking Hakuin as his model, he abbreviated the patriarch’s robe to a single thick, rough brushstroke, so that Daruma appears as a rather startled, comical face isolated in space. 1 Mason 2005, pp. 361–362, fig. 428. ↩ Literatur Mason 2005: Penelope E.
