Shallow dish with loop designs in black and cream

Artwork · Shōji Hamada · 1954 · dish

A mature work of Shōji Hamada (1894–1978), friend of Yanagi Sōetsu and Bernard Leach and a leading figure of mingei: on a round plate a traditional loop pattern, the “horse’s eye” of Edo peasant wares, the black and white glazes trailed unevenly into two large loops. Hamada built a climbing kiln with Leach at St Ives (1920–1923) and then settled at Mashiko. 1 Mason 2005, pp. 353–354, fig. 413. ↩ Literatur Mason 2005: Penelope E.
