Taku Kōshibyō (Confucian temple), Taku

Artwork · Anonymous · 1695–1708 · building · Taku Seibyō

A rare surviving kōshibyō, built over fourteen years for the local daimyo: the courtyard, gate and great hall of the main Confucian temple in Beijing compressed into a single structure entered through a Chinese gable — the Kyōkōmon reduced to a stone arch. Inside, an elaborately carved shrine holds an image of Confucius and four sages, among them Mencius; ceremonies have been performed there almost continuously since it was built. 1 Mason 2005, pp. 306–307, figs. 354–355. ↩ Literatur Mason 2005: Penelope E.
