Bowl with peach and melon design

Artwork · Aoki Mokubei · 1807–1808 · bowl · Museum Yamato Bunkakan

A bowl by Aoki Mokubei (1767–1833), one of the three great masters of kyōyaki, who ran a teahouse and found kindred souls among the literati around Rai San'yo: inspired by Chinese famille-noire porcelain, melons and peaches in yellow, green, purple and beige against black — but on an earthenware body and with a deliberate crudeness that makes it a personal statement. 1 Mason 2005, pp. 299–300, fig. 344. ↩ Literatur Mason 2005: Penelope E.
