First and Second Visits to the Red Cliffs
Artwork · Hyakusen · 1746 · byōbu · Hayashibara Museum of Art
A pair of screens by Hyakusen (1697–1752), of a Nagoya pharmacy family of Chinese descent: the poet Su Dongpo’s two excursions to the Red Cliffs of the Yangzi in 1082 — a pleasant autumn boat trip, and the late visit in frost, when he climbs the cliffs alone, sees a crane and dreams of an immortal. James Cahill has noted how close it is to the literati painting of Suzhou. 1 Mason 2005, pp. 328–329, fig. 383. ↩ Literatur Mason 2005: Penelope E.
