The Voice of a Spring Resounding in the Valley

Artwork · Okada Beisanjin · 1814 · kakemono

Okada Beisanjin’s mature style: overlapping rectangular rocks and triangular mountains carry the eye into deep space, but the strange angular shapes at top and bottom pull the peaks forward against the recession — a tension between perspective and surface. He was largely self-taught from Chinese manuals. 1 Mason 2005, pp. 336–337, fig. 392. ↩ Literatur Mason 2005: Penelope E. Mason, History of Japanese Art, 2nd, Pearson Education LTD. 2005.
