Two gold tenmoku tea bowls
Artwork · Anonymous · 1598 · tea bowl · Daigo-ji Temple
Given to Gien (1558–1626), abbot of Daigo-ji Temple, in thanks for his prayers for Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s recovery in 1598, the year Hideyoshi had the Sambōin rebuilt for his cherry-blossom viewing. Wooden cores covered with hammered gold sheets imitate the tenmoku glaze running down the sides; one of the gilt-bronze stands survives — perhaps from Hideyoshi’s golden tearoom. 1 Mason 2005, pp. 252–253, fig. 290. ↩ Literatur Mason 2005: Penelope E.
