Two tenmoku tea bowls

Artwork · Anonymous · 16th century · tea bowl · Daigo-ji Temple

Seto imitations of the Chinese Jian ware of the Chan monasteries on Mount Tianmu: conical bowls with dark iron glazes in streaks of brown and silver, meant to look like a fortunate accident of firing. Such pieces were highly prized and given names. 1 Mason 2005, p. 233, fig. 269. ↩ Literatur Mason 2005: Penelope E. Mason, History of Japanese Art, 2nd, Pearson Education LTD. 2005.
