Death of the Buddha, Tōfukuji

Artwork · Minchō · 1408 · kakemono · Tōfuku-ji Temple

An extraordinarily large painting of the death of Shaka by Minchō (1352–1431), the versatile monk-painter born on Awaji who became superintendent of buildings (chōdensu) at Tōfukuji; it is still hung each February on the anniversary. Conservative in style, as befits its public use, but freer in brushwork: outlines of varying width, shading in the emaciated faces of the disciples, red as the accent. 1 Mason 2005, p. 217, fig. 252. ↩ Literatur Mason 2005: Penelope E.
