Jigoku zōshi (Hell Scrolls)

Artwork · Anonymous · late 12th century · emakimono · Nara National Museum

Eight sections of hell. In the one for merchants who cheated their customers by short weight, a looming three-eyed, white-haired crone makes naked sufferers pick up hot coals from a fire and weigh them in metal boxes; the only light comes from the fire. 1 Mason 2005, p. 211, fig. 245. ↩ Literatur Mason 2005: Penelope E.
