Bodhisattvas on clouds (Unchū kuyō bosatsu), Hōōdō
Artwork · Jōchō and workshop · c. 1053 · sculpture · Byōdō-in Temple
Small figures attached to the walls around Amida in the Phoenix Hall: his celestial host on clouds, some playing music, some dancing, some in contemplation. A dancing tennin, her foot slightly raised as if about to step forward in time to the music, is particularly lively and graceful. From the workshop of Jōchō. 1 Mason 2005, p. 145, fig. 175. ↩ Literatur Mason 2005: Penelope E. Mason, History of Japanese Art, 2nd, Pearson Education LTD. 2005.
