Panel with medallions of hunting lions
Artwork · Anonymous · 7th century · textile · Hōryū-ji Temple
A silk brocade with medallions of archers on winged horses hunting lions — a Persian subject going back to the Achaemenid dynasty. Mason’s caption calls it Chinese; his text, almost certainly made in Persia and carried across the Silk Roads. Records of the Kamakura period say it belonged to Prince Shōtoku. 1 Mason 2005, p. 52, fig. 56. ↩ Literatur Mason 2005: Penelope E. Mason, History of Japanese Art, 2nd, Pearson Education LTD. 2005.
