Vessel with human face
Artwork · Anonymous · c. 100 BCE–c. 100 · vessel · Tokyo National Museum
A tall Middle Yayoi jar with a face on its neck — ears, nose, lips and eyelids in relief. Found in a cemetery of forty-one burials; jars like it may have held the washed bones of a second burial, the face guarding the dead. 1 Mason 2005, p. 28, fig. 23. ↩ Literatur Mason 2005: Penelope E.
