The Bedroom

Artwork · No. 2 in The Bedroom · Vincent van Gogh · September 1889 · oil painting · Art Institute of Chicago

The second version of The Bedroom, painted at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in September 1889, nearly a year after the first, and of the same size. Van Gogh sent it to his brother Theo in Paris on 18 December 1889. With its bold colours, thick broken brushwork and sharply receding lines the picture may seem nervous, but Van Gogh meant it as a calm and restful image. At the same time he painted a third, smaller version as a gift for his mother and sister, now in the Musée d’Orsay.
