La maja desnuda

Artwork · Francisco Goya · 1795–1800 · oil painting · Museo del Prado

Goya’s nude, painted in the last years of the 18th century, belonged with its companion, the clothed Maja, to the royal favourite Manuel Godoy. After his fall both were sequestered; the Inquisition called Goya to account for them in 1815. They came to the Prado from the Academy of San Fernando in 1901.
