Buddhist sculptor, a son of Unkei1. His standing demon Ryūtōki at Kōfukuji shows his father’s realism; he may have used a wrestler as his model2. Kobayashi 1954, “all the six of his sons worked in collaboration in the construction: Tankei, Koun, Koben, Kosho, Unga, Unjo”. ↩ TNM, Unkei 2017, “Unkei’s influence is more readily apparent in the standing image of the demon Ryutoki (No.35), whose realistically rendered musculature suggests that its sculptor, Koben, may well have used an actual wrestler as his model”. ↩ Literatur Kobayashi 1954: Takeshi Kobayashi, Study on the Life and Works of Unkei.
